For Eco Time to collect clockings, perform calculations, enable real-time monitoring, Web page viewing, etc, the Server module must be running. There are 3 ways of starting the system:
Manually. This requires the Server to be started manually from the windows Start Menu and selecting the Server Module option from the Eco Time menu.
Auto Start. This entails defining a shortcut in the auto start directory that will then start the Server Module whenever the PC is started.
As a Service. This entails installing the Server as a Service that will then start the Server Module whenever the PC is started.
It is recommended that either option b or c is used as it can happen that when the PC is restarted, the operator can forget to manually start the Server.
Set the Server to Auto Start
It is recommended that you add the Server to the windows Startup menu which will then enable it to be automatically start whenever the PC is restarted. To add the Server to the Startup menu, proceed as follows:
Click on the Windows Start Menu and browse to the Startup Menu item.
Now Right-click on the Startup Menu and select Open
When the Startup*file is opened, right-click in the folder and select *New / Shortcut from the pop-up menu and the Create Shortcut window will be displayed.
Select the *Browse*button.
Using the explorer, browse to your Eco Time directory and select the serve32.exe file.
Select the *OK*button.
Ensure that the serve32.exe file was selected and then select the*Next/Finished button. You might be prompted to enter a name for the sortcut, depending on the version of operation system you are running. The *server32.exe shortcut will now be added to the *Startup*option.
Close*the Explorer window. *Note: You can check that the Server has been added by going to windows Start / Programs / Startup menu and the serve32.exe shortcut should now be listed. Now whenever the PC is started, the Eco Time Server module will also be started automatically.
Installing the Server as a Service
A service is an application type that runs in the background and is similar to UNIX daemon applications. Service applications typically provide features such as client/server applications, Web servers, database servers, and other server-based applications to users, both locally and across the network.
Prerequisites
The Sever can only be installed as a service on the PC on which the Eco Time dataset has been installed. Services are started before network connections are made and will therefore not be able to connect to the dataset if mapped to another PC on the network.
The PC operating system must be that of Windows NT, Windows XP, Windows Server 2000 or higher.
Installing as a Service
Install Eco Time on the server PC and run the Server module from the Windows Start Eco Time programs group.
Right-click on the Server icon in the Windows taskbar and select Restore from the pop-up menu.
The Server window will maximize, displaying the Servers option list in the left side panel.\
Select Options and the following three buttons will become available:
Install as a Service. By selecting this option, the Server will be installed as a service. There will be no confirmation that the service has been installed succesfully. Reboot the PC and the Server will start automatically. Do not start the service via Windows Service Manager if Server is already running.
Remove as a Service. By selecting this option, the Server will be removed as a service. Reboot the PC to complete the removal of the service.
Windows Service Manager. This is a shortcut to Service Manager. You can use Services Manager to:
Start, stop, pause, resume, or disable a service on remote and local computers. You must have the appropriate permissions to start, stop, pause, restart, and disable services.
Manage services on local and remote computers (on remote computers running Windows XP, Windows 2000, or Windows NT 4.0 only).
Set up recovery actions to take place if a service fails, for example, restarting the service automatically or restarting the computer (on computers running Windows XP or Windows 2000 only).
Enable or disable services for a particular hardware profile.
View the status and description of each service.
Note: Whenever changes are made to the System Features or Server Options, the Server must be closed and then restarted.
